What to look for in an MPP vessel
When you compare multipurpose vessels for sale, the value drivers are:
- Crane SWL and combined lift capacity — the real ceiling for project cargo, and whether two cranes can twin-lift a single heavier unit.
- Tween decks vs. box hold — movable tween decks add flexibility for break-bulk and palletised cargo; a plain box hold suits bulk and containers better.
- Container fittings and TEU rating — how many boxes the ship can carry in-hold and on hatch covers if containers are part of your trade.
- Hold dimensions and hatch covers — weather-tightness and the stack weight the hatch covers can take, which matters for on-deck project cargo.
- Class, age and efficiency — IACS class, build year, and EEXI/CII standing all drive tradability and value.
Tip: Don’t shop by DWT alone. A well-geared 15,000 DWT MPP with movable tween decks can out-earn a bigger box-hold-only ship on a genuinely mixed trade — the gear and hold configuration decide which cargoes you can actually chase, not the tonnage figure.
